A summer in Wanaka just like the old days

Holiday weather several years ago or longer in Wanaka used to feature like the weather we're enjoying this summer. And talking to really old time locals they're saying the same!

This evening photo taken a few days ago is typical of what we're enjoying. It was taken about 10 minutes drive from Renmore House B & B accommodation.

What a magic afternoon spent with Mark Orbell on Ridgeline Tours. Mark Orbell's trusty landrover climbed us all over West Wanaka Station which borders the World Heritage Mt Aspiring National Park to experience the rugged beauty and solitude of this area so close to Wanaka township.

Dart River Jet Safaris trip Queenstown

Blair and Rosie took a day off from Renmore House with a group of friends to enjoy a Funyak Safari trip up the Dart River. This trip is in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Queenstown area and part of Mt Aspiring national Park which is one of the few places in the world with UNESCO World heritage Area status protecting a natural heritage site.
We funyaked back down to Paradise having stopped for a goumet picnic lunch on the way.Only one couple fell in and it wasn't us! Such a magic day amongst breathtaking scenery that has inspired movies from all over the world including Lord of the Rings.

Skiing around Wanaka

As this is posted it's dumping up on the local hills and mountains. Some people would say it's late arriving this year, but it's really just about average if considered over a longer time frame.

No doubt when it clears Treble Cone, Cardrona and the Snow Farm / Snow Park will be in full swing for a great season of boarding and skiing, and we've got the NZ Winter Games this year as well

Flight-seeing Milford Sound is efficient with Renmore House, Wanaka Accommodation

It may not seem so, but a good look on a map reveals New Zealand's iconic Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park is not very far away by air from Wanaka, [as the crow flies]. Whereas by car it's easily a couple of days, and several hours driving.

The delights of spring in Wanaka

Spring here is always dynamic, and while we have been busy readying your Bed and Breakfast Wanaka Accommodation, we've also been out enjoying the onset of springtime on our new walkways.

On the one hand we have the return of spectacular colour, [examples of which ended up back in the kitchen!]...

Along with the colours though, Wanaka always experiences very picturesque spring weather, but fortunately weather systems like this one that caused a lot of new-born lamb losses in Southland skirted us by again...

Spring is just around the corner and we've the new addition to the Wanaka Millennium Walkway

The Wanaka Millennium Walkway has been popular now for a number of years. The start is very close to town and it goes around the southern lake edge past Edgewater Resort and onto Waterfall creek and then some.

However very recently it has been extended hugely and now goes all the way to Glendhu Bay. It was very moody on last Sunday morning, but we could feel spring is in the air, which is not surprising as it officially begins in New Zealand today...

Just off the track last Sunday, we were surprised and delighted to get this view looking back towards Wanaka, from the top of a little hillock just ten minutes in from the carpark at the Glendhu Bay end of the track...

[Guests can use our bikes to explore this track, and picnic en-route].

Winter can be a very beautiful time in Wanaka - apart from the obvious such as skiing and snowboarding, it provides many visual delights.

We don't always have snow in town, but this is what it looks like around Renmore House when it does snow down low...

We were walking past the Wanaka Public Library recently for an early morning stroll, and it seems someone left the irrigation system on all night...

A winter wonderland

We've had some spectacular winter effects this year - settled weather has meant we've had a few inversions and this usually means a low cloud base with hoar frosts that coat trees and fences with an exquisite frost coating. Especially up the nearby Cardrona Valley.

One of the first areas to open this year was the Snow Farm up the Cardrona Valley. It is cross country or Nordic skiing only, but the Snow Park is nearby and it is downhill.

Lake Wanaka is rising

After all the rain that has bucketed down in the headwaters of Mt Aspiring National Park, Lake Wanaka has risen dramatically over the last 24hours.I popped down to the lake to get a couple of pictures to let you see the lake.

Hi again,
The summer season is nearly at an end and so it is time to get the paintbrush out to give upstairs at Renmore House a spruce up before the ski season starts in ernest.The kitchen and upstairs lounge are in for a makeover
Treble Cone ski field is getting snow at present and Jucy have come up again with the free ski pass for each day of car hire from July 1st 2010 so dust off the skis and plan for a winterbreak in Wanaka

Winding Road to Wanaka - Cavalcade :

The Cavalcade is coming to town ... Saturday 27th February

Witness over 500 riders, wagons and walkers dressed in period costume, in the Cavalcade Parade at high noon, Ardmore Street, free admission.

Enjoy live music, food galore, licensed bar, entertainment and stalls at the Market Day, 11am to 4pm, Pembroke Park, free admission.

New walking track from Wanaka to Hawea captures the imagination of..

Recently local walking and biking track Trusts in Wanaka opened a new bridge over the Hawea River, and this and the whole concept of a new walking and biking track has really captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

btw here at Renmore House Wanaka we are happy to lend mountain bikes to our guests. The whole track length from Renmore House is 38 Km return, with stop over at Sailz cafe at Lake Hawea

Wanakafest House Auction

This week sees us back at the Stonewood Homes House build project which is a fundraising project for the future of our community festival and the building of a community asset in Wanaka. The last minute details are being accomplished before the big no reserve Wanakafest House Auction to be held on Sunday 18th October. The photo shows Rosie with a group of Rotarian friends doing the landscaping around the house.

Trip to Egypt and Jordan

Blair and I have just returned from a great holiday in Egypt and Jordan. What an amazing privelage to experience such different cultures to our own and to push our comfort zones to the limit. The ancient tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the Pyramids, riding camels, deepsea diving, climbing Mt Sinea and Petra at night were some of the highlights we will never forget. Coming from 40 down to -1 degrees on our return home to Lake Wanaka was a shock but one to adjust to quickly as the countdown is on for the Winter Games NZ starting on the 21st August

As we've recently refurbished many rooms and completed our outside dining area, we've just finished making changes to this site as well. There are many new photos [our treasured garden keeps growing!] and changes to text notably Guest's comments, links to recommended stays elsewhere in New Zealand, and that we now have wireless Internet and a double inflatable kayak.

Once again we've witnessed nice autumn colours - they're still about too, and we now have a very good early winter snow cover on the hill, which bodes well for an excellent ski season around Wanaka
